Hello all collaborators.
In the last weeks I was investigating the "Harry Potter" trees, and I see that new versions rise almost every couple of days.
If it's so Intersting - maybe we should start a Harry Potter project and in that way we will avoid merging with real profiles?
We will need some curator help here of course...

I personally prefer to keep fighting them.

Fighting is OK when you know what/who you fight against.
I saw many duplicate trees built in several days, each is hiding behind one of the Potter family or it's friends...

I am with David - we need to keep on fighting - somehow - - it is so sad that someone has so much extra time and energy - to enter false profiles and try to sabatoge Geni and the work of all us hard family tree chasers or genealogists who have spent years of researching, sharing and trying to document and keep accurate the family lines and in doing so some of us get lambasted anyway when we blow apart the so called "Gospel' family ties lineages because they have been or were found in the LDS/IGI and their predigree program - and have just been automaticaly 'accepted' by the majority as being correct even tho there is no documentation behind them -

Perhaps geni should consider starting a separate companion website for just fake profles and call it geni-fictional.com

They could brand the site with different colored buttons instead of the "blue" color theme of this site as well as well as text to make it clear that this is a site for "fictional" family trees. The could market it as a companion web site where people are free to document the family relationships that occur in movies and literature. I know I like a good "dramatis personæ" when I'm reading a large sprawling novel like Tolstoy's "War and Peace" and would visit geni-fictional.com to find out about the cast of characters. All the Harry Potter, Star Wars Trilogy and Bart Simpson family trees would then have a place to florish and keep them off of the regular geni.com website.

Randy - Very good idea!!!
they should call it imaGENI

Randy, I like it! Noah Tutak, thoughts?
You should add this to the Feature Request on the Help page.

I was going to suggest this too... perhaps Geni should also consider a site for Pets (I remember we had a lot of these and fuss was made in the forum about the lack of a 'doghouse' for people to record their pets on the family tree. Some could not understand that although we say 'He's one of the family' that is quite different to including a pet on a family tree which is shared with other people. Who want's to be called cousin of a dog or cat or horse?

Ha ha -I like the idea - I could have used a family tree to help read War and Peace! Think of the soapie family trees:now there would be a real programming challenge to include all the incestuous goings on and illegitimate kids etc ;->
Terry - I know lots of people who would say they'd rather be known as related to the dog than their own blood relatives ;-> (I am not one of them - in case you were wondering ;->)

Let's take it one step forward, starting with disconnecting fake figures from real profiles.
If one wants to managae hos horses or other pets, or his favorite sory heroes - please do it - unconnected to real people.
thats the reason I've started the HarryPotter project.
I hope GENI will open the fakeGeni (or IMAGeni...) and we will move the fake profiles there.

Bit of an old thread but in my opinion the Game of Thrones family trees are very popular and i think that it would be a good idea to make them their own tree as has been done for Harry Potter.

Twice last year i used the Search function to report all the fake trees built to reflect the Game of Thrones world, most are created by Fake Profiles also, today i did another quick search and found at least another 21 trees. Assuming that CS did delete all the trees i reported last year that means there are roughly 2 fake trees created each month.

An isolated, public tree connected to a Project where users could request to be added as a manager sounds like a good idea to me, especially as many users seem to be putting quite some effort into their trees.

I thought that geni had some where a whole section where that stuff went but i imagine by now it's full...

There is a Fake Profiles project (which is where i found this old discussion) which it seems to me is dedicated to ridding Geni of fake profiles.
However the project page also has links to several other projects based on fictional worlds, the Harry Potter tree which this discussion originally proposed is in existence.

As the title of this discussion suggests the "old timers" got sick of deleting "Harry Potters" so instead formalised a fake tree for him.

I think that the number of trees (and their complexity) based on the Game of Thrones warrants a similiar treatment, i could do it myself (to some extent) but as a Basic User i cannot use the Geni Search function to contact profile managers.

I figured this Fake Profiles discussion was a good first location to broach the subject... next choice was the Curators Please Help thread.

Fake profiles (based on fictional characters such as Harry Potter, etc) are one thing......pets are quite another case.....in my opinion they can be addressed within the 'about me' notes.....NOT as actual family members (there is no 'blood line').......

Plus, in most animal lover's lives, there can be a large number of 'pets' to account for....(I personally have had at least 16 pets....if you include those that were my parents when I was growing up....and a number of them lived to age 20 or close to it......)......the very inclusion would be clumsy.

Randy's idea is OK....but I dont think that fictional people belong on a genealogical site. (we have enough trouble with people thinking someone is related to a famous person in error....without having to add a venue for fake people)

Hmm perhaps I shouldn't have revived an old thread.

Fay(e), Randy's post is more than three years old. I replied to this discussion because it seems to have been the birth of the idea to validate the Harry Potter tree.

I've heard of horse breeders using Geni to track thoroughbred blood lines. Putting family pets on would be just plain sad.

No 'e'

Sorry....just got done tryng to explain to someone why using 'before 1600' as a birth date was not a great idea......a name so common in the family that there were scads of 'matches' based on all the (i.e.) John Smith's prior to 1600....

Saw your re-up and just needed to vent some....and while I may see some value in a side-tree for fictional characters (tho with the number of possible entries is VAST) the idea of pets (as much as I love them) just hit me as silly.

If we are going to have fictional characters...how about all the Star Wars characters, Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh.....etc etc etc.

Are there alot of Winnie Pooh family trees on Geni at the moment?

"Luke I am your father... but no one knows who you're mother was so use Nn for her Geni profile. "

Unsure about Winnie the Pooh...but he is as real as Harry Potter...

If anyone has some spare time do a search for any popular cartoon characters, HBO miniseries characters like "Game of Thrones" or movie characters please do so. If you find them and you can view their profile click on the "Actions>Report and choose "Fake Profile." The profile will then be reviewed and if it is a fake can be deleted by geni staff.

I reported "Winnie the Pooh" and "Rudolph the baby Reindeer" today:)

Randy,

I have previously made efforts to rid Geni of the HBO characters, I know CS looks at all of my reports, i assume that all which i have previously reported have been deleted.

I have tried to start a conversation about the possibility of creating and preserving a special stand alone tree for them in the same manner as has been done for Harry Potter.

For those who are not aware Game of Thrones whilst set in a fantasy world revolves around the intrigues and scheming of a noble upper class struggling for power in a medieval style setting. As with the real medieval royalty of Europe everyone on Game of Thrones is some other characters cousin, brother or in-law and marriages as political alliances abound.

The point being that genealogy plays an important role in the plot so the series fits quite well wwith Geni. I don' know much about Harry Potter having never read it but i do watch Winnie Pooh with my kids, none of the characters in Winnie Pooh is related so a "Family Tree" of those characters would be complete nonsense. Star Wars, well i've seen the movies who hasn't? The only familial relationships are Darth Vader, Luke, Princess Leia and Uncle Owen. Which is hardly a complex family tree needing a program like Geni to track it.

The hardline stance that "All fakes must be deleted" obviously is not enforced.

I apologise for the unnecessary "e", we have had this happen before and i assumed you would remember, it was a jest made in good humour, hence the ()'s, i am sorry if it upset you again.

Alex

Accepted...

As long as I dont have to deal with imaginary people....it is problematic enough dealing with people who insist they are related to someone and show a link that is totally impossible....

As long as the line is VERY clear between real and fictional....do whatever you wish.

alex I thought they allready had a put all harry potter profiles here place but maybe they have give up on that?

PrivateThere is a HHarry Potter project and tree.
I am suggesting that game of Thronesbe given a similar treatment.

That is what I would like to discuss not the curse of gfake profiles or how to report them.

I would really like to see the Game of thrones family tree.

And there are plenty of people like Paramond of France are already in the Tree. He is fictional.

One difference is that Pharamond was formerly believed to be real.

If I am not being clear.
I do not l like fake profiles.
I don't particularly like the Biblical / mythological portion of the tree.
BUT I understand why so much effort has gone into the Biblical tree and I accept it as a necessity. Likewise I can see why the Harry Potter tree is not only tolerated but endorsed by the curators as a control.

i'm with you alex i find them as a annoying disctraction and agree with you about the game of thornes project idea.
