Wittenberger

The statement that the name was changed from Wittenberger to Wittenberg for those who immigrated to Israel is partially correct. My father, Joseph Wittenberger, had his named listed as Wittenberg on his passport coming to the USA. His father, Deszo, took off the "er" also but never left Hungary. Additionally the tombstone of my grandmother and aunt (in Budapest) have the name listed as Wittenberg. My aunt was born Wittenberger. There must have been some other reason for dropping the er. I would be interested in any information that would further explain the reason (in Hungary) for changing the name.
