Hande is - probably derived from Handa - a warrior community from old Rajputana some of whom migrated to kingdoms in Southern India and worked as soldiers . Surnames like Chowan became Chavan, Rana became Rane , Sisodia became Scindia/ Shinde etc. Some of the personal names in the earlier part of the tree have typical Rajput names.
The oldest Hande in our tree was appointed as Deshmukh in the Court of Adilshahi kingdom in the South more than 350 years ago and managed affairs in about 80 villages and towns near Junnar in Pune District. After the Marathas were defeated by the British in 1818, the British Rulers intoroduced aonther Revenue system in which the Deshmukh Vatans were abolished and they were given annual pension but no work. After India became independent in 1947, the Indian Govt. paid one time payment to all the Deshmukhs including Hande and abolished the system.
On behalf of our family I received the last payment from Khed Treasury in in Pune Dist in 1952.
