I often get the question while sending out collaboration requests - "How are we connected?" Since I'm a pro member, I can send them a direct linkage. However, a copy and paste of this linkage produces a mess of carriage returns and extra data that I have to reformat and paste into a message.
Geni has a nice link at the bottom of the linkage for "Share this path" - it would be nice if I could easily send it to the person I'm linking too. Alas, I only have the option to tweet or facebook it. I suggest Geni provide an option to send this as a private message to the other person linked. You may also want to give an option to share it with my family (sending out a more general notification). Seems weird that we have the option to share it outside of Geni, but little in the way of sharing it inside of Geni.
Let me know if there is an easier way. :-)

Ofir, that produces the same problem as I mention. Copy and paste it and you'll see what I mean. It looks like this...
...
You
->
...
your mother
->
show 28 relatives ->
...
her mother
->
etc...
This makes no sense to paste into a message. It should not have "show 28 relatives ->" and it should not be 5 pages long. It should look like this:
.. You -> ... your mother -> ... her mother -> ... her father -> etc.
so let's me understand this
can you see a path between you and them
if you do then you click on the share path and open a new page
in that new page you should copy the linke above
is this what isn't working?
do you know about the green pin option that's allows you to see how another member is connected to a common profile in case you don't see the path between you and them ?
Oh, you mean copy the URL link, not the linkage itself. Ya, guess that could work if it's public. That doesn't look like a dynamically generated URL though (looks particularly formatted). Can this be done with any two profiles and is open to the public? Seems quite a privacy / security issue if that were true.
Private User good question. I noticed the same thing, that share this path which SHOULD allow you to share the path with other Geni users is instead for external social media sites. Pretty strange. And the carriage returns are a huge pain to have to constantly delete, since I send a lot of emails to relatives with the paths.
As for sending the URL only, frankly with how often the path seems to get messed up from merges, that's a loaded gun :)
Ok, I just logged out and tried this and I didn't like what I saw. It worked. I thought that when you clicked to share it, it would create a public dynamically generated url with the information. This is not the case.
It's an easily formatted url between two people. It listed my full name (which is private and unsearchable) and the link through my parents (used their first initial) and going on to my connection with Noah.
1. I thought getting the full link was pro feature, which I could selectively share.
2. Why is this private information not restricted from the public?
In general those paths should respect the same privacy restrictions as you would get in the tree -- some people you can see the full name and click the link, some are first-initial only and not clickable. It may be different for the endpoints of the search, particularly when you are sharing a path from yourself to another profile. It's our intention to enforce the privacy rules sufficiently that you can share these paths without worrying that it's a gateway into your private information.
