Joel Daffner, 67, of Roanoke, and formerly of New York City, N.Y., passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Joel was born April 8, 1938 in New York City, the son of the late Benjamin and Beatrice Daffner. Joel served during the Viet Nam War in the U.S. Army.

Joel was a 1956 graduate of James Madison High School in New York and attended UCLA. Joel was known as a very intelligent man and for his talent at playing the piano. After his military service he worked as a driver for Call A Car livery service in New York. He and his wife relocated to Roanoke to be closer to their families.

Joel leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 21 years, Debra Tompkins Daffner of Roanoke; two daughters, Adrienne Daffner of Boston, Mass., and Beth Ricci of California; three stepchildren, Angel Brown and Gregory Decol, both of Roanoke and Fred Decol of Nevada.

A funeral service celebrating Joel's life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2005 at the Roanoke Chapel of Lotz Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Roger Graves. Interment will follow in the Murray Family Cemetery in Franklin County. Joel's family will receive friends Thursday, October 20, 2005 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
