Several images I've encountered have an impossible obstacle to overcome with regards to provenance. Specifically, their purported subjects' lifespans predate the emergence of portrait photography. When asked about the provenance of the image, contributors, rarely answering at all, usually simply provides their modern source of dubious reliability. The purpose of the question is to ascertain if the photograph (or other medium) reliably depicts the person on the tree. A couple of articles below may be helpful if terms or history are unclear:

I hope to add tags here if provenances are challenged yet remain unestablished.

Adam,

This would actually be better done using our Project tool in my opinion than in discussions. It can be an ongoing collection / cleanup effort with less ephemera, and with some permanent resources available in the "overview."

You can start a Project here:

I tried it your way and discovered that since profiles can only be added to projects if you have management of the profile. It should be so much more convenient to point out an inconvenient truth. :)

Adam,

But do you want the errors corrected, or not?

50 curators, 49 million profiles ...

You can, in Project discussions, post the URL link, even if you can't load the Profile to the Project.

We'll work out a methodology for error correct there as well. I'll start a discussion.

Let me also "advertise" the Project you started, Adam.

Anyone who would like to join it can request to do so. I am all for cleaning up images in the tree.
