Hi Everyone,
Could anyone direct me in how I would start a tree for a non-relative? Would I have to create a new account for that person? The person I want to start a tree for is deceased.

Sherri - I do not know how to help you, but I am wanting to do the same. I hope someone posts a really good answer......

@احمد
Thanks - I thougt about that, but usually a deceased person does not have an email. I tried using my own email, but Geni comes back saying that that email account is already in use.

Well that sounded good in theory, but after first attempt the first thing that I encountered was that you are not allowed to mark the first person in a tree as deceased. While that works, the person will automatically be a zombie......

any other suggestions out there?

hmmm... i'd do the long way by putting "unknown" descendants as living in order to start it off with then deceased can start from there onwards

Can you create them in the tree in the wrong place, like your brother or sister and then break the relationship?

So,, last time I downloaded my tree, my software found 8000 zombies out of 100,000 people, so what's one more

If you start ihem out as your brother and sister, make sure there name isn't john smith or something, who knows who will merge into it
Isn't there an alive person that's related to them that could start it, or you could pretend to be a live relative (Legal problems could occur)

What is the reason you want to do this, it may change the answer.

Is this person or one of his relatives already in Geni, even if it's a 4th great Grandfather, you could work the tre from the top to the bottom, then back from the bottom to the top.Simply find the manager of such a person and tell them what you want to do, they should be happy that your helping them with a tree (once you add the first person to the tree, you become the manager of that person and can add what you need to it)

But the easiest would be a zombie until you connect to another tree.

The best way to do it, is as Private User suggests. Create the branch, as a sibling of your self or something, and then cut it loose, by breaking the connection, via the Edit profile in the Tree view. BUT don't forget to bookmark the branch or you'll have a hard time finding it.

That way, you still manage all of the profiles from the same account.

Thanks to all the help from everyone! The suggestion from Brendan Molloy works great! ....and thank you Shmuel for reminding me to bookmark!

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all the in-put. The reason I started this discussion was because I wanted to start a tree for a noted Canadian hockey player. They are not in Geni's system yet.
Shmuel, how do I bookmark a profile? Not to sure. Thanks
Sherri

Sherri,
after you open the profile, there are two ways to do this:
1) the Geni way - on the right end of the blue toolbar across the top of the page, you should see a Star. Click that. This creates a Geni-Bookmark. You can see your list of such, by clicking the down arrow next to it. This is very useful, as it is part of Geni, so these links are available anywhere you use Geni from.
2) the usual way, save a bookmark in your browser (usually by pressing Ctrt+D).

Thanks Shmuel. I didn't know we could do that! Sweet! that is going to save me a lot of hunting and pecking. :)

If you're unable to split the tree, ask for assistance from a curator at https://www.geni.com/discussions/156925
