she had a mother who was born in Silloth, Cumberland, who became a town councillor in Barrow-in-Furness. My impression was that she was a formidable character. Her family had a gentlemen's outfitters in Dalton Road where later a Woolworth's was built on the site after the Edwardian building was demolished. Louie's brother Ernest Smalley inherited the shop but Louie managed/ran it. She and her husband, also Frederick Athey, lived above this shop & brought up their son there. Louie continued there when widowed until Ernest sold it forcing her to retire very reluctantly. She went to a terrrace house on Walney fairly near the large F & Nancy Athey family. F & N lived at 27 Ocean Road, Walney until more children necessitated a bigger house: 9 Empress Drive (also on Walney but overlooking the channel) was bought in the winter of 1952??. Louie became ill long before this and moved into Ocean Road to be nursed until she then died (in hospital). She had cancer. She was a voracious reader of Mills & Boon type romances. CAS
