Why aren't the Kitovers Cohanim?

Tradition holds that Abraham Gershon Kitover the son of Reb Ephraim MiBrody and his wife is a descendant of the Shach

But if he were a male descendant he would have to be a Cohen
So maybe the Shach is the maternal grandfather?
