I have searched www.thepeerage.com for any proof of William being an Earl and cannot find any proof under any variation of the spelling. Would person who included his title please add a note giving his/her sources.

I am having difficulty finding proof that William was the son of John Coles. If he were an Earl of England, he would be in the peerage lists, and often the parentage is traced back many generations.

I did an FMG search of all name variations and didn't find him there, either.

Sorry, Maria, this question is beyond my competence.

Thank you, Pam. I've got pending merges in that branch and I'm having trouble sorting them out.

Have you tried looking for Sir William Colley? A long shot!!

I saw Sir William on the peerage website but not the right person -- Sir William was born in Ireland, not England, and the dates don't work. I think this William is a bad merge and not the son of my John Coles at all.

I will wait another few days to see what further conversation develops but I am inclined to disconnect him from John Coles.

Oh dear, Maria......good luck!! I think that this has happened to all of us at some stage.

Lynne, it is one of the pitfalls of a collaborative site such as Geni. That is offset by the willingness of knowledgeable participants to share information.
