Capt. Redmann would spend 2 weeks down in Pilottown, with the other Mississippi River Bar Pilots, and then 2 weeks back in New Orleans. While courting Consuelo, she was a schoolteacher, initially in a one-room schoolhouse just outside New Orleans. The school later moved, and Capt. Redmann then bought the schoolhouse, had it transported to a barge, and then floated down to Pilottown. There he had it furnished to be his bachelor pilot's quarters when he was doing his 2 week tours as a bar pilot.
