Could anyone please tell my exactly what it means to give auto-accept to your collaborators?

And once you have, how do you easily find your new collaborators in the list?

5/29/2010 at 3:35 AM

Whenever one of your collaborators that you chose to 'auto-accept' from proposes a merge, your account will automatically accept that merge.

5/29/2010 at 4:10 AM

Günther, auto-accept does not add new collaborators to your list. It only works with your existing collaborators.

David - I know, what I asked was when you already have over 500 collaboborators all sat on auto, and you get two new you need to look through all 26 pages the are as I see it not in the end, and not at the start!!

5/29/2010 at 6:17 AM

Excellent point. I wish the collaborators list showed the date that the collaborator was added, and allowed us to sort by name or date.

5/29/2010 at 9:57 AM

you can search them by name

5/30/2010 at 2:51 AM

Yes ok - but it would be nice if it was possible to search on auto/manual

Where is the list of collaborators? I have some, but do not know where to find the list

5/30/2010 at 3:33 PM

@claudia

click settings upper menu, to the right

you then find collaborators in the left menu, click it and voilá!

So easy :)
Thanks!

BTW where do data conflicts end up??

5/31/2010 at 3:58 PM

In merge issues.

Günther, same place they used to be. The merger gets a chance to resolve then. If not, then in "merge issues" and in the actual profiles.

6/1/2010 at 2:51 PM

Normaly its the manager making the last merge that also make the data conflicts! What I don't understand, is that I haven't seen any request so far!!
I think the best would be if the request on conflicting data was sent back to the manager who requested the merge.

6/1/2010 at 2:58 PM

maybe the "last manager" is not the one that has the best info
I would say - if someone merge and get the ability to resolve conflicts, they should only do so if they have knowledge enough to solve the conflicts

oherwise leave it to the main manager, who will get the conflict in his/hers merge issues list OR send back to requester

6/1/2010 at 3:01 PM

Günther - you have 5 conflict data in your merge issues list
you can filter the merge issues and get only conflicting data or pending merge etcetera, in the list

6/1/2010 at 3:04 PM

You are reight that the last manager not nessacerly have the knowledge solve the data conflicts. But still - have you put any of your collaborators on auto-accept?? Have you seen any request on conflicting data??

6/1/2010 at 3:13 PM

Note - if you do a series of mergers and have opinions on what the result should be, just open the profile and choose "Resolve conflicting data" under "More actions".

No need to wait for the last merge.

6/1/2010 at 3:21 PM

Harald - what I am trying to say is that perhaps the manager should do the "resolving data conflicts". Or the one with the best knowledge. I leave rather than guess. If I am the manager -- I check.

Günther - Yes I have.
And collaborators have me on auto too, some of my collaborators tend to send me special messages with data resolve links for me to attend to as a r e q u e s t e r
I resolve if and when I can.
If I am the manager - I will get the conflicts in my merge issue list, they do not come to you as a special request automatically in your mail or something. You find them in your merge issue list.

I think that one should be extremely careful using automerge. I just had a request to merge a profile, where the dates of birth and death show an age of only two years, and she was married and had children, another request the same day the age was 4 years and she was also married. Even though the profile is your own you have to check it before you request merges, someone can have edited it in between. Especially when siblings baptized the same names, and deceased early (within a few years) have elder namesakes that survive, you have to be careful. another problem is the tradition of naming children after grandparents for several generations. I came across one yesterday with 6 times Elisabeth and 6 times Edward, the merges were a horrible mix of all six of each. We really MUST be careful when we merge. With automerge the extra check of the merger disappears and mistakes go undetected.

Michael T Lancaster
You are reight the auto merge leave all the responsabillity on the requester, thus we all need to be exactly as carefull when we request a merge as we (hopefully) are when we do it by ourselves!!!! I my opinion no difference - the auto-accept means, that all your collaborators collaborators also are yours!!
With the auto-accept it gives no meaning to say I don't accept new collaborators, you will get them anyhow!!

@Susanna ths
I haden't seen!!

6/2/2010 at 2:06 AM

@Michael, perhaps an "about" or "circa" date for some of the same name issues would work? I've seen some profiles with the dates included. In my own family, that would be a big help, since fathers, grandfathers, sons etc. all in a row have the same names - sometimes even the same middle names. And also the multiple names within one generation where a child dies and a later child is given the same name.

On another note - I know it doesn't belong here, but I can't find any reference to it - what do the stars/asterisks before (or sometimes after) a name mean? Also I've seen a cross before at least one of the big tree names. Can anyone tell me what they're for? Thank you!

* is a way of finding the master profile (the one with most managers) in some of the heavily merged lines.

I´m just stepping in from the sideline : This "auto-accept-request"; i don´t really understand how it works. Can anyone explain that to a stupid dane ?
:-) Erik

6/2/2010 at 4:55 AM

Janice, I have also used * on my profiles to try and resolve bad merges in areas of my tree. It's really helpful when going through the stacking wizard to visually see which profiles are mine (the ones with the *). I usually remove them when I have finished cleaning up the bad merges.

6/2/2010 at 5:00 AM

Erik, "auto-accept" is a feature on your collaborators page. When set, collaborators that send you merge requests are automatically accepted. It speeds up the merge process, but care should be exercised when using it. I do trust most of my collaborators to do the right thing, however, I have come across examples where I have had to undo merges, so use at your discretion...

Thanks David. It´s never too late to learn something new :-D

It would be nice if Geni added a checkbox for a warning and maybe a small text box to accompanyit. It could be in the form of a stopsign. The word "Namesakes" or "Died young" underneath (drop down).

6/2/2010 at 6:23 AM

Showing middle names would go a long way toward avoiding bad stacking, even if just the first 3 or 4 characters. In my tree, half the females are named "Marie" followed by a given name. In the resolve duplicates window, they all look the same! When no birth date is given, one has to take the time to check individually.

Susanna and David, thank you for the * explanations!!
