The change on Hitler's surname through his father Alois Schicklgruber (he was born out of wedlock and received his mother's surname) is that Alois won a fantastic award in the military. His uncle Johann Nepomuk Hiedler / Huettler told Alois he should change his last name to his dad's.

Upon writing up his new name, the recorder misspelled it as Hitler. And it stayed. Adolf Hitler was actually proud of his spelling of his surname because he said Hiedler was "soft" compared to the sound of Hitler.
