the story as I understand it is something like:
Grandpa moved to Montana from Pierre when he got married to Mary Scott, his first wife. They had two kids, Don and Bill (Scott) They were divorced when the kids were young, and she moved back to Indiana where she was from. (I was told that she was "expensive to keep") After that, I heard grandpa got into some trouble either in Montana, or South Dakota but that it got resolved. Anyway, supposedly the mom sent the kids to see thier dad in Fargo for a visit, or the summer, I don't really know. When Don was 5 and Bill was 3, the mom put them on the train in Indiana to Fargo, I guess in charge of the porter. When the kids got there, he supposedly told her that he was moving back to Montana with the kids, but he didn't move, he just changed his name. The kids were too young to remember the name change, but Don told me he remembered his dad telling him that his mom had died. When he met our grandma, he was going by the name Sherman, and all of Luella's kids had that name on their birth certificates. I understand that @donald sherman did not find out until he enlisted in the Marine Corps. and they required a birth certificate. He was surprised when it said Schumacher instead of Sherman. He had to get friends and neighbors to sign afidavits to say that he was really who he said he was.
