My mother's family surname was always known in the Miramichi area as "Driscoll".... in later years, we (her family) realized that our grandfather George Driscoll's name was actually "Drisdelle", altho there are several spellings.
A cross on the grave of my mother's sister, Lydia, in the Nelson cemetery was hand-carved by my grandfather, George. Her name is spelled "Drysdel" on the cross, so there's another spelling to add to the list.
It's interesting how the family name changed in just one generation from Drisdelle to Driscoll - no doubt because he & my grandmother moved to Nelson (Miramichi) an English/Irish/Scotch community where Driscoll was a more common surname. Also, I understand that my grandfather was illiterate so he may have been unable to correct the spelling. I'm sure in his day people working at Burchill's sawmill in Nelson were paid in cash (pennies, probably!) rather than by cheque with a name on it, so many family names were changed depending on who was recording them. Not everyone enjoyed the benefits of education in those days!
