I notice that Joseph Smith, Jr. is credited with having 29 wives. Actually, he had only one legal wife, Emma Hale, with whom he fathered had seven children. They adopted two others. The point is, there is no foundation for claiming that he had more than one wife. There is no DNA evidence to show that he ever fathered more than the seven children with Emma Hale. There is strong contention that he, himself, never participated in polygamy and, therefore, did not relate to 28 other women as husband to them. I am not a part of the Church of Latter Day Saints, so perhaps this is research and work for others who would want the record to be correct. I leave it there, but my personal record reflects what I consider to be his correct marital status. He married Emma in 1826 at age 21. Keep in mind that he only lived to be 39 years old.
well vance,
i went and looked at the tree, think this was a case of duplicates plus ...but nope you are right...most of them are not the same ( maybe three or so can be merged) wow that is a mess over there. ...connected to the tuttle and the snow tree. what i can do is agree that there was only one marriage.
see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Smith,_Jr.#Family_and_descendants for the whole story that may help someone fix and configure that area. if i can be of help, let me know ^U^

Well, he was actually assassinated. Mrs. Emma Hale Smith denied vehemently the claim that he ever took upon himself other wives. His son, a founder of the Reorganized Church of LDS, questioned his mother closely about the reports of his multi-marriages and he, too, dened that his father was ever married to anyone other than his mother. I would be interested to know why the Family Search Center maintains such a long list. This should be a research question that would intrigue a member of the Church of the LDS. My interest is that I am a 10th cousin to Joseph Smith and, inasmuch as he had children only with Emma Hale, I am not interested in the other alleged marriages. I do care about historical accuracy, however.
well hmmm, this does present a problem. what if..we merge the duplicates, and the other women are put in the "about me section" with a link to their profiles. i really dont know how to handle the multiple marriages. it really makes that area of the tree a mess.... but accuracy is important.
(and i can only imagine that assassination plot.)
@Kathleen, when I read neutral stories about Joseph Smith, many of the wives had husbands away on missions or they had husbands who just did not know. Legally, he was not married to these women. Spiritually they were.
Also it was written that Emma Hale, his legal wife, disliked his "plural wivery" and would deny the marriages, because there was only 1 LEGAL marriage. After his death, many of the women married Brigham Young and Heber Kimball. Their stories as polygamists seems to be more accepted than that of Joseph Smith Jr.'s.
