Found possible census records from Montgomery Country Ill ( http://history.montgomeryco.com ), indicating he was 5 yrs old when the Federal Census was taken in 1870. Also appears that his father was also John Cress (age 28 in 1870) but no record of him or his father in the 1880 census. Unable to determine if his father was John J or John M. If had is mother's name would know which (marriage records for John M and John J indicate John J married Nancy Walker; and John M married Catherine E. Aughinbaugh: the dates I did not look up)

Found that John J married Nancy Walker in 1834 so we can eliminate him which means John's father was probably John M and John J was the father of John M
