Hi Carole,
I notice that the Wikipedia articles references thepeerage.com (amongst other references) and thepeerage.com references Burke's Peerage, which would tend to indicate that thepeerage.com might be more reliable.
I haven't bought my stirnet.com membership yet but you can see the pages for a few seconds and William is included in there: http://www.stirnet.com/main/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=79 Stirnet's terms and conditions forbid you to pass on any information in there so forgive me if I do not breach the t&cs here!
Stirnet seems to reference a book called "The House Of Stanley"
Hi Carole,
OK, I have bought my Stirnet subscription now - see also http://www.geni.com/discussions/6000000007271582496?msg=60000000073...
Stirnet refers to both Emma and Mabel as possibilities for William's mother:
John de Stanley of Stourton and Stanley (b c1285, d 1346)
'The House of Stanley' identifies John's wife as Emma, dau of Sir Robert de Lathom of Lathom). BP1934, supported by TCP, Ormerod & Visitation (Cheshire, 1580. Pro Stanley de Hooton) , identify her as ...
m. Mabella Hausket (dau of Sir James Hausket or Hawkset of Stourton Parva)
(1) Sir William de Stanley of Stourton and Stanley (b 1311, d c1398 or 1360)
m. (1336) Alice Massey (dau of Hamon or Hugh Massey of Timperley)
On another page, it refers to some sources as:
Main sources: 'The House of Stanley' by Peter Edmund Stanley (published by The Pentland Press in 1998; ISBN 1-85821-578-1), the pedigree on 'Stanley of Hooton and Storeton' within George Ormerod's 'The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester' (1882), Visitation (Cheshire, 1580 & 1613 & 1663, Stanley of Hooton)
Hope this helps,
Arthur
