Dear family and friends,
I was diagnosed in March 2009 with leukaemia. I have had three courses of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant in July. However after a month I have had a relapse. I have now become immune to the chemotherapy and my doctors have advised that my best chance is a new drug called AZACITIDI...NE (ZINADA) which should put the leukaemia back into remission and would allow a further top up of my bone marrow. However the National Institute for Health and Clincal Excellence (NICE) who makes decisions about which treatment should be made available routinely within the NHS has refused the drug due to costs. My doctors have put in an appeal to the Primary Care Trust (PCT) which will be heard early January. Hopefully they will allow funding for the drug, but this is no guarantee and without this drug I have no chance. The reason why I have put this on Facebook is to spread the word and ask for support from family and friends and those who are affected by this disease, so that in the future the NHS will fund these drugs without putting patients through this difficult procedure. I have contacted my local Member of Parliament, Jim Dowd MP and I will also be writing to the Secretary of State for Health, the Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP. On Monday 4 January, I propose to send in a petition request to 10 Downing Street. Once accepted, I will need support from everyone to sign the petition.
