Dick and Ira, brothers, lived in a house below Lillington in the Bunnlevel area. They lived in a house surrounded by black jack oak trees. As they pulled up in the yard they blew the horn on the A model Ford automobile and his dad, Waymon Melvin said, "I want you boys to look"...as they drove up, horn blowing, chickens flew out of the open windows, dogs ran down the open hallway and out the front door. The doors and windows of the house were open and animals came and went at will. Dick and Ira were known in the area for the manner in which they lived...they did not mind chickens and dogs being in the house.

I remember my mom, Evelyn Byrd McGowan, talking about these brothers as the original eccentric "hippies" of their generation. This story probably illustrates that quite well!
