Wyndham Malan Grattan Guinness was born in Dublin, and educated first at Bath, Somerset, and subsequently at Trinity College, Dublin, and, after a distinguished career in that University, he obtained his B.A. degree, and took his M.D. in 1898. At his M.B. examination Dr. Guinness obtained first place, and also took a special course in lunacy. He was clinical assistant in the Dermatological Department of the Adelaide Hospital, Dublin, where he succeeded in obtaining the Dermatological prize, and the Hudson medal was awarded to him from the same hospital. He occupied the position of resident i the Adelaide and Dr. Stephen's Hospitals, Dublin. Dr. Guinness came to New Zealand in 1898, spent some time in Napier, and arrived in Auckland in 1900, when he commenced the practice of his profession in Symonds Street.
