I met Aunt Mania in 1980 when I and my parents made our first trip to Israel. Although she didn't speak English and I didn't speak Hebrew, I could feel the love that she had for me and my family. Aunt Mania made a family recipe for us - called verenekas,(sort of like perogies) this is a small dough filled with potato or Kasha that has been fried and served with sour cream. My grandmother used to make this for me when I was a child and I hadn't had this since 1975 when my grandmother past away. It brought back such wonderful memories.
