Afraid I can't offer any assistance with this one. I'm amazed at how much information you have collected and entered on the Geni site. I wish I could find the time to do the same on the Strohmeyer side - we really don't know too much about our ancestors beyond my paternal grandparents. Even my one cousin who has spent a good deal of time and effort on that hasn't been able to put much together, but I suspect that she's not been checking records at the same depth as it appears you have. Great work.

Much of the information on my father's side was done by my aunt. The information on my mother's side was done by mother prior to her death. The information on Steve's line, I did do the research on. There are still many head banging things about that line. The internet sure has helped to speed up the information that one can get, but then you still need to research the information, because some of it isn't correct.

I hear you on the accuracy of information on the Internet. Some time ago I found an indication that one of the Dayton (if I remember correctly) ancestors had possibly been on the Mayflower. That line went all the way back to something like 500 AD. I got all excited, but recently I checked again on Ancestors.com or one such site and found the line had been deleted a couple of levels AFTER the supposed Mayflower member. Then I heard that there were a lot of incorrect entries on some of those sites - everybody was trying to show that one of their ancestors came over on the Mayflower. But it's not just genealogy - within 24 hours of Brittany Murphy's unfortunate passing, I heard three different stories about where she had been born.

One more thing - I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do as one of your collaborators. I'm beginning to see some signs that you have entered information on someone I know that creates a second "record" for that person (one of my brothers is one such case). Geni tells me that there are two records for that person and asks whether these records are for the same person. Am I supposed to do something about solving those types of riddles, or is it up to you? I'm just not sure what to do.

Yes, I have the same problem and have emailed Alice about trying to merge two of my tree records. So, Alice, any answer to Mike might help me.

As my collaborator you can merge the two people, as we are combining trees, so our tree becomes one. and the records will match up and we will have more information for that person. Says "yes" if they are the same...

Are you saying that our trees have become one or need to become one or are in the process of becoming one? If they need to become one, how do I start or can you do it?

Basically Alice and I are trying to merge two family trees, one that my brother and I started for the Strohmeyers and Gallaghers (our grandparents' families) with one that she started that has some records in common with our original tree. So I guess you could say that we are "in the process of becoming one." As for what you need to do, unless Alice has more advice, it looks like you've filled in your profile pretty well, so I believe that you could be of the most help at this point by helping to ensure the accuracy of the family members that you know of. We'll do the merging part when the time is right. Sound like a plan?

Rod much of the information that I have in my tree, my mother did. I will add information to the note section for each person as I have time.

Mike is on my late husband's side of the family. I did quite a bit of research on the Gallagher family, but could only go back so far. I haven't done any research in Ireland. the Gallagher/Shay family came from Ireland prior to the 1840's, but I couldn't find out from where. Now Myrtle (Dayton) Gallagher's line does go back to the Mayflower to William Brewster.

So in answer "yes" we are becoming one big happy family :) alice

Just writing to ask what happens when one merges two records denoting the same person. For instance, my brother Paul has two records marked "pending merge." One of the records has more information in it than does the other. Does Geni merge these records by overwriting one of them or does it add the two records together, delete any duplicated information, and then leave a single record? Who is the manager of the new record?

I just want to know what I'm "signing up for" before I do anything that can't be undone.

So you are the manager of your brother Paul's record, if one record has more information then the other record it will merge the information that is the same (it will be green). What is black is different or information that isn't there in one of the profiles.

You can always go back into a profile you manage and edit the profile (ie add or delete info).

It is different for non Pro accounts then Pro accounts (I'm not sure how they are different). I have a Pro account, so anything you want to have fixed I can do it for you.
