Biography
According to June Baldwin Bork's claims in The Burnetts and Their Connections, Jeremiah Burnett "was born 1718 on Piscataway Creek in South Farnham Parish of Essex County, Virginia" to John Burnett and Amy Gatewood.[1] This claim is disputed for the reasons explained in the Research Notes below, and those disputed parents have been detached from the profile pending a reliable source corroborating Bork's claim.

He is not named in John's 1718 will, but Bork claims that this is because Jeremiah was born in 1718 after his father died.

Bork also associates the following records with this man:

1763 Hanover Co, VA Tax List with son Isaac.
Served in the Revolutionary War while living in Bedford and Montgomery Counties, VA.
1774 May Court Orders: Bedford Co, VA
Jeremiah Burnett was paid 8 pounds, 6 shillings and 6 pence for service in Capt. William Campbell's Company under Lt. Daniel Trigg and Alexander Cummings.
Bork identifies the following children of Jeremiah:

Jeremiah Burnett [ II ] (1740-1816)
Joseph Burnett (ca1743-1813+)
Isaac Burnett (1738-1804)
Isham Burnett (1738- killed by Indians)
Benjamin "Bond" Burnett (1740s-1801)
John H. Burnett (1750- ).
Charles Burnett.

Bork lists Mary McDaniel as his wife and the mother of Jeremiah Burnett's children (p. 110);[2] However, she acknowledges elsewhere in the volume that this is only one possibility.[3]

According to Bork, Jeremiah Burnett "died after 22 October 1773, place unknown."[1]

Research Notes

Uncertain Existence
As described in detail in the attached research paper, some researchers dispute that John Burnett and Amy Gatewood had a child named Jeremiah after John's death, and dispute that this Jeremiah Burnett even existed.

June Baldwin Bork identified an additional child named Jeremiah Burnett supposedly born after John's death. There is no known reliable source for this claim and it is likely incorrect for the reasons explained in detail in this research paper. YDNA has also proven that the supposed descendants of this Jeremiah are a completely different YDNA line than testers from the Descendants of John and Lucretia Burnett surname project at FTDNA. [1] [2]

Death Date
The "after 22 October 1773" date of death is almost two years before the Revolutionary War started (in April 1775). His service pay, shown by court order dated May 1774, also predates that war. Could his son Jeremiah be the Rev. War veteran? Or could Jeremiah Sr's service have been in the French and Indian War?

_______________

Burnett Family genealogists Mary Nell Burnett and Susan Kromer Hunt have researched and written extensively about the issues with "The Truth about Jeremiah b. 1718". He did not exist for many of the reasons above and additional reasons that they point out in papers they have shared with the Burnett family. In digital messages, Susan Hunt recommends that this profile and the supposed wives be disconnected from the alleged children.

DNA evidence has connected some of the Burnetts to the group R-M269-A (R1b) Burnetts of New Kent, Hanover, and Albemarle VA. This can be found on Family Tree DNA here https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Burnett?iframe=ydna-results-ov... . This grouping is a separate and distinct group of many on this list of "descendants of Jeremiah who does not exist". They are NOT descendants of John Burnett, II and Amy Gatewood (who may need some work on her profile - I am not sure she married Joseph Burnett also).

I think it is time we clean this profile up.
Disconnect all children.
Women attached as children are definitely not proven anywhere.
Mark "spurious." Wives are not correct and need more research based on what the Burnett genealogists have found. I will see what I can dig up.

I'm happy to check through the DNA study to see which of the male children belong in the same DNA group and note that on their profiles. Also noting they are not the child of Jeremiah and do not descend from John and Leticia Burnett. This is something that needs to be taken care of. There are many Jeremiah Burnetts, but this one is not to be confused with others who existed.
