This has been a commonly misspelled name, especially in the Census'. Not only did I receive this name 40 years ago, so have others.
Regarding date of birth, I see no source information for the August 8, 1848 date. However, the 1900 Census clearly says May 1848. I reviewed the document several times, but every time came away with May. The 1900 Census have several examples of August and April on the same page of the census as May.
Regarding the place of birth, only the 1880 Census states Missouri, but the 1870, 1900 and 1910 Census state Kentucky.
