It has been suggested that John Hix (who married Rebecca Rive) is the brother of Captain Robert Hicks, the famous Indian Trader. Agree?

In what ways have these two lines mixed?

This is just one more way they have been confused.
Nathan Hicks, Indian Trader is the Indian Trader but not the son of Robert--- this is who we have at Geni:

Nathan Hicks, of Surry County as son of Robert Hicks, of Brunswick County and Mary Hicks

This is likely a dupe of Rebeckah Hicks

Rebecca Hicks
but she is attached to William Trader Hicks who needs a lot of work.

I suspect another "Indian" wife who has been conflated with Na-ye-hi Hicks or Nancy Broom or Nancy Wolf --- very messy
*sigh.

I am coming to the Big Tree basically with DNA matches and Y haplotype I-P to build on THEIR trees and hope to fill in the gaps.
But not enough Hicks researchers have joined Geni and attached their Y.

Nathan Hicks, of Surry County presently has NO children attached to his curated profile--- not known

Nathan Hicks, Indian Trader has documented children, including two sons who were chiefs.
The Y project groups MY Hicks into the VIRGINIA group.
In Fentress County, Tennessee, there was a man who was called "Indian Joe" who is seen in many trees as my ancestor (direct) but this is incorrect. But may be WHY so many TRY to connect these Hicks. Fentress and Morgan County, TN Hicks ARE from the SAME progenitor.

I do not know if "Indian Joe" is connected to the Chief Hicks line or not.

The main problem with THIS area of the tree is the time and location--- many records were destroyed by Confederates after the Civil War.
Another problem is families were divided by this war in Tennessee. Some researchers insist our William William J. Hicks fought on both sides but I do not believe that to be true.
Another problem with figuring out who is "Indian Joe" is folks consider Cherokee the only tribe.
My 3rd great grandfather died before his last child was born. His wife Nancy was buried in the Chickasaw Nation.
The Quarterly Newsletter "Generations" says Adry Adry Hicks was traveling to/from the reservation when he died.

"The mystery is that we have an Indian Joe, supposedly of Cherokee Heritage, that married a girl named Hicks and took her name to prevent re-capture by the US Government. He lived and bought land in Morgan County near the Fentress County line around Rock Creek. He later moved the family to the Solomon Hollow area of Morgan County where he acquired additional land. He ended up living next door to another Hicks family named Ardy, no relation (?). Turns out this Ardy has connections with the Chickasaw Indians in Oklahoma where he takes a trip and later dies. Many of his children once married, move to the Chickasaw Nation to live. His wife Nancy lives most of her life in Morgan and Roane Counties in Tennessee but is buried in Oklahoma next to her husband."

"For some reason, Adry traveled to the Chickasaw Indian Reservation in Oklahoma sometime in 1855/56 about the time his youngest daughter Martha Josephine was born.
While in Oklahoma he died and was buried there in the Simon Cemetery in Love County.

Hi,

Since I'm new at this it's hard keeping track of the info about the Hix (Hickes; Hicks) family.

As an overview: The Hicks family in Glouchester UK were involved to in Virginia and trade. The first Hicks in Virginia to my knowledge is Baptist Hicks (often Hickes) a wealthy merchant for the East Indian trading Co one of the financiers the Jamestown settlement. He traveled back and forth first coming to Jamestown in 1609. Then In 1611 Sir Baptist and William Hicks his nephew were at Jamestown, Sir Baptist went back to England in 1628 and died there in 1629.

Robert Hicks (Hickes) or Sir Robert Hicks as he is sometimes called was Baptist's father.

ROBERT [1] m. Julian, dau. of William Arthur and had issue:

SIR MICHAEL[2]

FRANCIS[2]

BAPTIST[2]

I'm suggesting that Hicks line in Virginia came from this line. The Robert Hicks of New England that has son Samuel, is descended from Sir Robert's brother Thomas. Thus Robert, who came to MA in 1621 is the cousin of Baptist Hicks. Robert married John Morgan's daughter, Elizabeth- an it will be remembered that John Morgan sponsored many emigrants who came to Virginia.

So we can see the relationships developing that lead to John Hicks and Captain Robert Hicks, the Indian trader- whose important line is found throughout colonial Virginia.

How do we connect the two?

R-

And that seems to be the question.
