New member Walter Chamberlain writes from the profile for Thomas Hayward

Hello,

As far as I can tell, I'm a descendant of the above through my mother. My ancestor that came to America from England was Nicholas Hayward, b. 29 Dec 1611. The lines described on this site record this Thomas as his father.

I've read the citations attached to this profile, but I'm curious whether or not there is documentary evidence for his/my line proceeding backward. Clicking on each father's name on this site yields:

Thomas 1584-1663
Thomas 1562-1623
Miles 1530-1621
John 1508-1594
John, I 1482-1567
William, III 1445-1515
William T., II 1430-1462
William, Sr. 1405-1450
John Heyward (Hayward) 1380-1430
James 1350-1380
Walter 1334-1387

Please feel free to email me directly at: (redacted email to avoid spam) , as I'm very new to this site and not proficient in its navigation.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Walter Chamberlain

The profile and pedigree for Thomas Hayward (1584-1633) who married Joan Hayward is sourced from:

From Baltimore: Biography (Google eBook) Clayton Colman Hall Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1912 - Baltimore (Md.). Page 45-46.

(X) Thomas Hayward, only son of Thomas and Agnes (Beaman) Hayward, born November 9, 1584, and died October 14, 1663. He was a silk-weaver by trade, and a citizen of London, residing in St. Andrew parish. He married there, August 22, 1610, Joan, spinster, daughter of Walter Haward, husbandman, of Saulthurst, county Gloucester, and their children, all baptized at St. James, Clerkenwell, London, were:

  • 1. Nicholas, (see forward).
  • 2. Roberte, baptized June 15, 1613, died in infancy.
  • 3. Anne, baptized March 8, 1615, died young.
  • 4. Nathaniel, born 1617; in 1642 he had a messuage and tenement in Saulthurst, county Gloucester, formerly occupied by his brother, Nicholas, who was then in New England. Nathaniel was a resident of Saulthurst, where he paid taxes in 1649 and 1653. He married, June 12, 1642, Abigail, daughter of George and Abigail Byam, and brother of George Byam, who came with Nicholas Hayward to Essex county, Massachusetts.
  • (XI) Nicholas Hayward, eldest child of Thomas and Joan (Haward) Hayward, was baptized in St. James, Clerkenwell, London, December 29, 1611. He was evidently away from his home in England in 1642, when Nicholas Hayward, or Haward, appears in the records of Essex county, Massachusetts, and also away in 1663, when his younger brother Nathaniel was the only son present at the inquest after their father. He came to New England, settling first at Salem, Massachusetts, where he was a fisherman. May 8, 1672, he petitioned the court for exchange of half an acre of land on the road leading to Beverly. The selectmen laid out a quantity of the common land on the north side. A fisherman made the will of Nicholas Hayward, January 6, 1682, and it was proved April 10, 1683. In it he mentions sons; Nathaniel and Nehemiah, deceased; son Nicholas; grandson Nehemiah; grandsons Jonathan and Samuel Hayward; granddaughters Elizabeth, Abigail and Sarah Hayward; "children of my son Nehemiah, deceased, namely, Sarah Harad, Anah Sargent, Roose Hayward." Nathaniel Hayward was appointed executor. There are no records showing the name of his wife, who was called "Sister Howard," but we have the date of baptism of one of their children: ...

So, now we need to investigate how credible the source is, and if it holds up against cross references.

The book is a compilation of biographies published in 1912 from "various contributors."

This is an alternate offer for parents and wife.

Why I created this distinct Nicholas Hayward entry.

Nicholas Hayward's son Nathaniel was baptized as the son of Sister Howard, and the only Hayward/Howard listed as a member in full communion at the time was Rose Howard, who was admitted 1640:10:3. No further record of her was found. The name Rose is relatively uncommon, but son Nehemiah named a daughter Rose, and the name reappears in the next generation, as well.

Hypothesizing that Nicholas Hayward married a woman named Rose in England, a search of Find My Past records uncovered one and only one Nicholas Hayward-Rose marriage in the appropriate time period (1635±5 years), that of Nicholas Haiward to Rose Langly, in 1633 in the "London Diocese," London, Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex counties [Boyd's 1st miscellaneous marriage index, 1415-1808].

If this hypothesis is correct, there should also be a birth or baptism of a son, Nehemiah, to a Nicholas Hayward and wife Rose. There is one and only one, a child, Nehemia Haiward, baptised 12 December 1634 at St John, Wapping, Middlesex (also recorded at St James the Great, Bethnal Green, Middlesex). He is the son of Nicolas Haiward, mariner, of Gun Ally, and his wife Rosa [London, Docklands and East End Baptisms]. There are no other entries for a child of Nicholas Hayward.

These two records fit the hypothesis so well that I am accepting this information, pending further discoveries.

I'm not finding much at AmericanAncestors.org (NEHGS), but this is an interesting recent tidbit:

  1. NEXUS: New England Across the United States. Boston, MA: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1983-1999. (Online database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2014.). Vol. 6, No. 2, (1989) "Ahnentafel" by D. Alden Smith. Part lll. (continued from Parts I & ll). I remember that this had impressed me back in 2015.

George Byam and Nicholas Hayward were associated in Salem; I believe their property was adjacent. It seems reasonable that they were brothers in law.
