For each of you:
You are a Manager and a grandchild of Philip.
Did you know him growing up?
Did you know any of your great aunts and uncles who were his siblings?
Did you hear him talk of his parents Grandparents? Siblings?
Yes I knew my grandfather and many of his siblings. He was the youngest of 11. His Yiddish name was Fischel Chandon. In English he was known as Philip Charles Levine. Some relatives, like my Uncle Sam in South Africa used Levin. His father was Mates. On his brother Benjamin’s headstone it says son of Matisyahu. Mates had two wives who were both Smilg. Everything on my Ancestry tree is absolutely correct about my grandfather. I also knew his wife Ida Gertrude (Chai Gittel), all of my aunts and uncles and all of my first cousins. I knew of many of my father’s first cousins, some of whom were at our family events. The ones I know the least about were the oldest who left home before my grandfather was born. I’ll be glad to answer any questions. I have the physical copy of the ketuba and a picture from their wedding.
I believe I was 25 when he died. My grandfather was born on the second day of Rosh Hashana, probably 1893 in kupiskis, in Lithuania. We used to get together as a family to celebrate his birthday. He arrived 1913 and married my grandmother in 1920. He included her on his naturalization papers in 1920 so she never filed her papers. They had four children Shirley (Sarah), Sydney, David, and Harriet.
