William and Delilah Haney Trail of Tears Oral History (brother to James): Delilah and her family were rounded up on the Trail of Tears. They were camped when the family heard a ruckus and hid in some nearby trees. There they watched as white soldiers beat an Indian scout because he refused to polish their shoes. The soldiers strung the Indian up in a tree and continued to beat him and left him there to die. Once clear, Delilah's family cut him down and took care of him. This is how William (the Indian) met Delilah. They travelled through St. Louis to Illinois where they were later married in Jefferson County Illinois March 1, 1838. I assume they ran from the Trail of Tears... this is apart of the oral history I need more background on.
