Eldred Fabrication

Three wills relating to the Eldred family are widely cited on the internet and in some print publications, but extensive searches have failed to find the originals, or several baptism records cited to corroborate them. Other documents cited for the genealogy of this family have been found not to contain the facts assigned to them. This page provides detailed background to the category Eldred Fabrication.

The three wills are those claimed to be of:

• John Eldred, of Corby in Lincolnshire and Knettishall in Suffolk, dated 17 January 1489;
• Reginald Eldred, of Knettishall in Suffolk, dated 4 February 1528;
• Thomas Eldred of Ipswich, dated 18 October 1640.

Two additional wills are quoted. These do exist but do not contain some of the cited facts.

• John Lawsdall of Thurlby, dated 19 September 1545;
• Nicholas Eldred of Knettishall, dated 27 August 1566.

These wills are used to support claims about the ancestry of Samuel Eldred (abt.1620-aft.1697) and other early Eldreds in the British colonies in North America. In 1998 Vernon Eldred described how they did not exist in the relevant record offices, and noted that publications "had accepted in good faith the apparently unsubstantiated abstracts that had been circulating amongst some Eldred family historians in the USA".[1]

This re-analysis draws on three publications that seem to give the most detail about the wills:

• The Saxon House of Eldred by Nelson Beardsley Eldred and John Trevor Eldrid.[3]
• The ancestry of Robert P. Eldredge by Robert P. Eldredge.[4]

Disputed Origins

There are no reliable sources showing that Samuel was the son of Thomas Eldredge (abt.1595-abt.1640) and Anna (Watson) Eldred (1590-1642), or that he was baptized at Suffolk, England. His alleged parents have been removed, and his birthplace changed to England.

Research Note:

This profile was previously attached to wife Anna Watson, and to sons Samuel Eldred, John Eldred, Charles Eldred, and Thomas Eldred. As the only evidence relating any of these persons to this Thomas Eldred was fabricated, they have accordingly been detached.

So, detaching Thomas Eldred (son of William Eldred, Sr. & Mary Eldred) as husband of Anna Watson

Joan was the wife of Thomas Eldred from about 1620 to before 1629, when she was remarried at St Clements, Ipswich Suffolk to Robert Church on 13 December.

Her marriage to Thomas Eldred produced three daughters:

1. Sarah - bp. 25 December 1622; m. John Plover 21 December 1639
2. Margaret - bp. 27 February 1624/5; m. Robert Barnes 28 December 1646
3. Mary - bp. 23 July 1626
