Surnames: Whitehead, Vick, Skidmore
Audra Rice and I have recently found we share a small segment of autosomal DNA from 23&me.
The only possible surname connection we have been able to make is Whitehead. She claims descent from Arthur Whitehead (Jr?) b 1648 James City Co, VA through his son William b 1672 IOW Co, VA down through her 3g gm Francis Whitehead. I show descent from Sarah (Whitehead?) m Richard Vick b abt 1685 IOW Co, VA; indications are Sarah's father was Arthur Whitehead Jr. I think it is likely that Sarah and William were siblings. Also Richard and Sarah's son Jacob Vick m Patience Whitehead. We know Patience's father was named Arthur Whitehead; I suspect this Arthur was the son of Arthur Whitehead Jr. and brother to Sarah and William.
So it would be:
Arthur Whitehead, Sr
Arthur Whitehead, Jr b 1648 m Mary Polly Godwin
children
1. William Whitehead b IOW 1672 m Rachel Lewis McKinney, Audra's ancestors
2. Arthur Whitehead, III d (IOW?) 1744, whose dau was Patience Whitehead m Jacob Vick son of Richard Vick and Sarah Whitehead.
3. Sarah Whitehead b IOW 1687 m Richard Vick b abt 1685 son of Joseph Vick, my ancestors.
My info on these Whiteheads came from the book on the descendants of Joseph Vick by Beatty and Vick. In their book they express some question that Sarah's last name was Whitehead. They also note that Arthur Whitehead b 1748 was a junior. They reference a book on the Whiteheads, Whitehead and Related Families by Margaret Whitehead Rhyne, privately printed 1971. I have not seen that book.
Another intersting connection is that Audra and I share our match with another dna cousin who has found a New England Whitehead ancestor - Ellen Whitehead (1607 - 1655) m Thomas Skidmore.
Of course it could be that our shared dna is from an as yet unknown ancestor not Whitehead.
