Connection to the Latter Day Saints microfilm databases

Started by Dan Berwin Brockman on yesterday

The Church of the Latter Day Saints genealogy data base contains many small town records to help connect their members to their ancestors. Most of the Jewish birth and death records were actually recorded by the Catholic Priest of the town. Often he was the only one authorized to keep town vital records as he could read and write in the local language as well as in Latin and other languages.

In the 1930's these records were collected in the towns and microfilmed and films were sent to Church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, US. They were then copied on individual microfilm, put in index order and copies were made for the many church libraries with microfilm readers. A smaller library would take an order for a town film from the church headquarters and in due course a film would arrive and could be viewed.

Recently, in the 2020's the microfilms were digitized and put online. This is a major step forward toward making the information available worldwide.

For the towns the microfilms often contain other data on Jewish activity in business and Synagogues.
