Jews of Čekanice (village 6 km South of Blatná)

Started by Frank Hansen on yesterday

My grandmother Růžena Kafková, born in 1902 in Čekanice, is mentioned is mentioned in this chronicle of the village written sometime between 1965 and 1970.

According to gradebooks in the archive in Strakonice, my grandmother went to school in Blatná for 3 years
in school years 1913/14, 14/15, 15/16.

That link goes to the 2 page section about the Jews of Čekanice. The forward gives some background on the chronicler and his background. He was born in 1902 and must have known my grandmother as a child. In the summer of 2024 I visited Čekanice for the first time and actually met the son of the chronicler who is living in the same house mentioned in the short bio of the chronicler.

Note the chronicler is named Josef Kafka, but pretty clearly he was not Jewish. My Czech is pretty bad so I was not able to communicate with him in much detail.

Anyway, thought it might be interesting to take a look at that section about the Jews of Čekanice.
