The Fourth Crusade, which was supposed to recapture Jerusalem, went awry and the Crusaders sacked Constantinople in 1204, placing one of their own leaders (Baldwin of Flanders) on the throne. His reign was short, just under a year, and he was followed by his brother Henry, who ruled until 1216, and then by Henry's brother-in-law, Pierre de Courtenay (who was crowned in Rome but never got to Constantinople).

The "Latin Empire" existed 1204-1261, when the Greeks won back control of the core territory (Constantinople and environs), though successor Latin territories hung on into the 15th century (it's all very complicated).

By the way, Innocent III, who had called for the Fourth Crusade, was fit to be tied when he found out how far it had departed from his intentions! "Be careful what you ask for..."

I think we've heard this before. Mathematically the number of possible ancestors far exceeds the actual population, so there has to be a high degree of "pedigree collapse". For persons of British Isles (and especially English) ancestry, the "most recent common ancestor" usually works out to somewhere around Edward I-II-III (and sometimes involves Edward III himself).

My paternal grandparents never knew it, but they were 8th cousins even though they only met by chance as adults (long very involved story I don't propose to go into at this time).

The same applies for Sweden, my parents who met by chance are 8 cousins, my brother and his wife 10, the average between any swede is said to be just around that.
