Revisiting the parentage of Maj. John Smith, of “Purton” who married Ann Smith

Previously shown as the son of Thomas Smith based on

Some prominent Virginia families; Vol. 03, Louise Pecquet du Bellet names John's father as Thomas the emigrant. Thomas is also named in the 1980 Review of Gary Boyd Roberts in Genealogists' Magazine, v. 20, Journal of the Society of Genealogists, London.

However, there is also evidence for Christopher Smith & Elizabeth Smith as his parents.

Biography

Extracted from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Smith-521

John Smith, eldest son of Christopher Smyth and Elizabeth Townley, was baptized 12 September 1624 at Burnley, Lancashire. He had a daughter, Blanche, who was baptized 7 March 1651/2 who was named in John's mothers will.[1] Alt. DOB 12 Sep 1627[citation needed]

Speaker of the House of Burgesses of Virginia in 1657.

John Smith married Anne Bernard, daughter of Anne. Anne Bernard was guardian for the two daughters of Samuel Matthews of Warwick along with John Smith.

John Smith (1654 - 14 April 1698) was the only child of Smith/Bernard.[2]

Disputed Parents

Christoper Smith (Shown in Stonirakes England in the 1660 poll tax for Friercliffe) & Elizabeth Towneley whom were married 3 May 1624 in Burnley Parish, Lancashire, England. They had five (5) sons and two daughters. The Smith & Towneley families are from Burnley Parish in Lancashire, England. Their children listed in Elizabeth's will written 28 Jan 1675/6 and probated 5 Jan 1679/80 are as follows.

Sons:

  1. Thomas Smith
  2. John Smith
  3. Lawrence Smith
  4. Christoper Smith
  5. Richard Smith

Daughters:

  1. Elizabeth
  2. Susannah (may have married a Scarborough of Summerhouse, York)

Note: An Edward Smith is noted as a son in "Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties" He either was deceased before the will or had already received his inheritance. More search DNA on his ancestor's would be warranted.

This is will evidence for John Smith as son of Elizabeth Towneley although it would help to locate the records for Blanche Smith, apparently living in 1675 and not the daughter of Anna Bernard.

In the will of Elizabeth (TOWNLEY) [HALSTEAD] SMITH written 28 Jan 1675/6, and probated 5 Jan 1670/80, she names all five sons:

  1. John Smith
  2. Lawrence Smith
  3. Christopher Smith
  4. Richard Smith
  5. Thomas Smith
  6. Elizabeth (Halstead) SCARBOROUGH of Summerhouse, County York, and
  7. Blanche SMITH (d/o John SMITH), bapt. 7 Mar 1651/2.

Thank you. JSTOR currently doesn’t like iPad and I was too lazy to switch to iPhone.

So, who’s this first wife who kept Blanche Smith, still living in 1676 and not in Virginia? Maybe there’s a probate record in 1680 to show if she (or a husband) claimed her share?

Another data discrepancy I notice is Mike Marshalls database at Early Colonial Settlers shows a birth or baptism date of 12 Sep 1627 at Stonyhurst, Burnley Parish, Lancaster, England. That may be findable.

It seems there are still mixups with other John Smiths in Virginia to resolve? Or do we feel comfortable with his offices, military assignments, property, and bring the John Smith on Gov. Berkeley’s side for Bacon’s Rebellion?

Can we point to more associations with Colonel Lawrence Smith

This from Wikitree is incorrect

Daughters:
Elizabeth
Susannah (may have married a Scarborough of Summerhouse, York)

The daughters of Elizabeth Smith

  1. Ellen Halstead
  2. Elizabeth (Halstead) SCARBOROUGH of Summerhouse, County York

No Susannah’s.
