Tēnā koutou e te whānau. Ko Brent Rawiri Frank Ahuriri tōku ingoa.
I am currently on a journey to learn my mother tongue, while also on a journey to learn where and who I come from. Matua Henare is my great-great-grandfather, and I had always heard that there was somewhere in our history when our surname went from being Potae to Ahuriri. Finding this website, I have learned that his biological father wasn't Enoka Potae, but that he was raised by him regardless. This may partly answer something I've been wondering.
My pātai for the whānau is: does anyone know how matua Henare ended up carrying the surname Ahuriri? Was this a name bestowed or gifted to him, or was this something he chose for himself? And if anyone knows the story of how this came to be, I would also love to know why it came to be too.
I appreciate any and all comments you have about this; I would love to kōrero about our whakapapa. Kia ora.
