John Cleland was resident in the Stirlingshire parish of Campsie when he married Margaret Sommeruell at Kilsyth in the same county on 1 September 1646.

He is presently identified on the Geni World Tree as the son of Alexander Cleland, fiar of that Ilk, and his wife Mary Hamilton. According to Stillman Foster Kneeland, writing in "Seven Centuries in the Kneeland Family (1897)," this couple did have a third son named John Cleland, but he is reported to have settled at Laird Braes in the Wigtonshire parish of Leswalt and not at Campsie in Stirlingshire. Clearly, two quite different men named John Cleland are mentioned here. The difference between them is underlined by the following facts: (1) John Cleland in Campsie is reported to have married Margaret Sommeruell in 1646 and to have died in 1677. (2) John Cleland of Laird Braes is reported to have married Katherine Ross in c. 1651 and to have died in 1683.

In view of the foregoing it seems clear that John Cleland in Campsie is not the same person as John Cleland of Laird Braes. In order to correct this error I propose to disconnect his profile from the family tree of Alexander Cleland, fiar of that Ilk, and Mary Hamilton.
