Is anyone else looking into Jeremiah Carter , born 1803 or 1804 in New Hampshire? It seems there are two of them, one born to Betsey (c. 1768 - after 1860) and Samuel Carter (unk). The other was born to Nathan Carter and Sarah Farnum, though confusingly they seem to have been close to the same age and each have a sister named Judith.

Betsey's son Jeremiah married Emmeline Morrill and they lived in Peacham, Vermont. They had a number of children, several of whom died young, but not all. I am descended from the him, through the only child of his second marriage, to Mary W. Richardson. Their child Abby/Abbie was my grandmother's grandmother.

When my grandmother was researching her family, she ran into stumbling blocks because after Mary's death, Abby went to live with her aunt Judith, now Kittredge, and seems to have used that last name. In the 1860 census, both Abby and Betsey Carter were living with Judith Kittredge, taking some of the guesswork out of the familial relationships.

My grandmother found -- though I have yet to find a copy -- that Jeremiah's will was in probate by 1864. Most online sources have Jeremiah dying in 1871, though I believe that is the other Jeremiah Carter, whose parents were Nathan and Sarah.

Is anyone else trying to unravel this riddle? It feels like the two Jeremiahs have been conflated so frequently that it's hard to know what sources to trust.
