A number of pedigrees published by MyHeritage claim William Cleland, the husband of Lucy DuPass, is that son of James Cleland of Pitdinnes, merchant in Edinburgh, and his wife Jonet Henderson, whose baptism was registered at Edinburgh on 27 June 1673, but evidence which connects the child with the man who subsequently married Lucy DuPass has not been provided.

It is also claimed that William Cleland was the father of the English novelist named John Cleland (the author of Fanny Hill) but I cannot find any evidence to support this proposition.

If anyone has evidence which proves that it was the child named William Cleland (baptised at Edinburgh on 27 June 1673) who married Lucy DuPass and became the father of the English novelist named John Cleland I would be grateful if they would bring it forward.
