A long standing tradition has held that Thomas Mayhew Jr. married his step-sister, Jane Paine, daughter of Thomas Paine and Jane Gallion, the latter of whom was the second wife of Thomas Mayhew Sr. This story continued to be told as late as the 1901 history of Martha's Vineyard.[2] More information see source.
However, documentary evidence indicates that Thomas Paine and Jane Gallion/Galland had only one child that survived to emigrate to New England, Thomas Paine, Jr. See this entry in the 1639 notebook of Thomas Lechford, dated 8 Sep 1639:
"To all Christian people to whome these presents shall come Wee Thomas Mayhew of Watertowne in New England merchant and Jane Mayhew wife of the said Thomas Mayhew sometimes wife of Thomas Payne late of London merchant guardians & tuitors of Thomas Payne an infant of the age of seaven yeares or thereabouts sonne of the said Thomas Payne and Jane Mayhew..."[3]
There is no other child for them to be guardians of.
Therefore Jane, wife of Thomas Mayhew Jr. was not a Paine, and Thomas Paine and Jane Gallion had no daughter named Jane.
