I was asked by a descendant of these folks to take a look at the lines and I think 'maybe', based on what I came across, that this Benjamin is connected to the wrong parents. I saw on Ancestry where some folks have his parents as Zachariah Holcombe and Mary Mercer. Problem there is Mary Mercer was married to a Jeremiah Holcombe:
Here Benjamin is connected as the son of Zachariah Holcombe and Catherine Michael, and I did see one single tree on Ancestry with those parents connected. Maybe copied from here or vice versa. However, the geography doesn't work. I
I put notes from a descendant on Ancestry who seems very familiar with the Cherokee lineage on the lines and he only listed that Zachariah Holcombe from Granville County NC was this Benjamin's father. He didn't list Benjamin's mother. In any case, the Zachariah Holcombe connected here on Geni wasn't from NC. So it seems like a case of same-name confusion.
To further complicate matters, Benjamin's Wiki page has a totally different set of parents and geographies that don't fit either.
The only thing everyone seems to agree on is that this Benjamin married Sarah Nicholson. Everything else conflicts.
This Benjamin's FInd-a-Grave page:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/231427518/benjamin-holcombe
lists:
BIRTH
1781
North Carolina, USA
DEATH
1844 (aged 62–63)
Monroe County, Tennessee, USA
BURIAL
Eleazar Cemetery
Mount Vernon, Monroe County, Tennessee, USA
and clearly identifies him as the husband of Sarah Nicholson but doesn't mention his parents, leaving me (amidst all the conflicting connections) to conclude his parents are unknown or unproven.
Jeremiah Holcombe and Mary Mercer had a son named Benjamin but he was born in SC and died in Indiana.
Zachariah Holcombe who had a wife named Catherine...his Wiki page seems uncertain what her maiden name was. He is listed as Husband of Cathene (Neuman or Michael) Holcomb. They did have a son named Benjamin who people have married to Sarah Nicholson, but his Wiki shows he was born in SC, not NC, and that he died in Georgia, not Tennessee where we know from Find-a-Grave that Benjamin and Sarah were buried in the Eleazar Cemetery.
I'm just sharing the inconsistencies I've discovered in trying to help my cousin find answers. These aren't my ancestors and I don't have the needed answers. I suggest perhaps someone contact the person who posted the history I put into the profile notes since they seem to have more knowledge and can possibly help sort all this out. That would be matthewramey1_1 one Ancestry He has two public trees attached to his Ancestry account and since he's the one who posted the info about the Walkingstick lineage, I 'thought' he might have a correct tree with some answers. I was wrong! I was shocked to discover he has Benjamin born in Granville NC but died in Indiana! lol And he has his parents as Jeremiah Holcombe and Mary Mercer, neither of whom were in either NC or Indiana. Another lol ....sigh
I'm not going to contact Matthew Ramey about the inconsistency of what he has in his tree and having posted that Benjamin's father was named Zachariah from Granville County NC. I"ve already spent more time on this than I normally would for connections I'm not even related to. I'll just share all this info and let those of you descended from Benjamin sort it out as best you are able.
