Alexander Hutchison and all of his brothers who lived to adulthood became ministers in the Church of the Brethren. Along with many other Brethren, during the Civil War Alexander and his family fled west to escape the Civil War. They did so because there was a tremendous amount of pressure on the Brethren men to join one of the armies, especially in Virginia where so much of the fighting took place. The historian of the congregation that Alexander originally belonged to in Monroe County was able to locate a letter written to a member of the congregation informing them of this death. This was how I obtained an exact date of death for him but have no location for his death or burial. His widow and children returned to their farm in Mercer County after the war.
