Death certificate shows Joe Sims died from a gunshot wound ruled to be a homicide. The three daughters were listed as wards of the states in the 1940 Census at the St Vincent Orphan Asylum fro Girls in Louisville. Flossie Alvey does not appear on the 1940 Census, but she is back with the daughters in the 1950 Census, after her marriage to Paul Croghan.
