Armistead Shumate did not apply for the revolutionary war pension during his lifetime (I believe he forgoed it). After his death, his widow, Elizabeth, applied. She was living in Georgia. It was denied due to lack of evidence. An appeal was made that included several friends recounting the way Armistead spoke of his time in the war, and that he was at the Battle of Yorktown under Cpt Blackwell. His daughter, Francis Moore (wife of Matthew S Moore) of Spartanburg, South Carolina, additionally added that her father never applied for the pension because he was indifferent and he said he could "live without it". Frances said her mother was ignorant of the pension.
