It appears to me that two different Edward Lewis families of North Farnham Parish have been mixed up. This is what I believe to be the best we know as of today. Neither are known to be at all related to Sir Edward Lewis of Edington Priory and The Van or to Edward Lewis, of Barnstable

Feedback is welcome. Sources are uploaded, and relationships are locked.

Edward Lewis, Sr. Was the son of John "the Immigrant" Lewis & his wife we think was Lydia Lewis although that’s not proven. He emigrated with his family from Wales and married Mary Lewis about the year 1660. She had been attached as daughter of Dr. Francis Morgan, of Kittery & Sarah Morgan which is highly unlikely. Mike Marshall’s database has her as daughter of Hugh, not proven.

This Edward & Mary had three children only according to Mike Marshall’s site, https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I3644...

  1. Thomas Lewis who married Mary Lewis
  2. Mary Lewis no further info
  3. Edward Lewis, the younger who married Mary Hammond and who married Martin Hammond second. This Edward Jr’s family’s is not developed.

Now this is where it gets tricky. It is very tempting to combine him with a very obscure man I’m calling Edward Lewis, of North Farnham Parish But it truly looks like he’s different and I’d welcome feedback that I’m misunderstanding.

We don’t know the parents or name of his wife although no doubt it was probably Mary. :). He had one surviving son, and that’s how we know about this family: John Lewis Probate record.

Title: Deed Abstracts of Richmond County, Virginia 1701-1704

Text: 5 May 1701 to 8 March 1704 Deed Book 3, 1697-1704 Page: p. 98-99

Deed
Created: 8 Mar 1704/5
Recorded: 2 Oct 1706

This is a deed between the five daughters of Edward Lewis, whoinherited his land by the death of his sole heir, John Lewis, who diedwithout issue prior to 1704.

In the deed, three of the daughters with their husbands sell the landthey inherited to two of the other daughters and their husbands.

Simon Taylor & Elizabeth (Lewis) Taylor, Thomas Jesper & Anne (Lewis)Jesper and Christopher Pridham & Mary (Lewis) Pridham together sell"...all their whole Estate right title & interest of in and to...""...Joseph Deeke & William Lynton..." two patents for about 888 acresif land in Richmond Co., and Northumberland Co. This land was grantedto Thomas Lewis, William Morgan and Edward Lewis.

Mary Pridham relinquished her right of dower 6 Nov 1706.

Elizabeth Taylor and Anne Jesper acknowledged their right of dower andreleased any claim they might have on the land 2 Oct 1706.

——

In other words:

Edward Lewis of North Farnham Parish, Rappahannock County acquired land which fell into Richmond County upon its formation in 1692; this descended to his only son, John Lewis. John Lewis d.s.p. and intestate ante 1704/5 and this real estate in North Farnham Parish became the property of his five sisters all of whom had married prior to this date. They are: Johanna Lewis, Mary Lewis, Ann Lewis, Elizabeth Lewis, Katherine Lewis

But how can this be if that Edward is the same man as Edward, son of John? Because there are plenty of records associating the second generation Thomas & Edward, and their many children.

An old rootsweb study had not identified this younger Edward’s parents, but it does not seem he was a new arriver. You can see that report here:

I wonder if Edward Lewis, the younger & Edward Lewis, of North Farnham Parish are the same, and there’s a misinterpretation in “only son John.”

John Lewis heirs were his sisters. That may not mean he didn’t have brothers.
