Recently, I have stumbled upon a puzzling delimma with known dates, names and locations, however the names and locations tell a different story.
I'll give a brief breakdown below:
1. Marie Letitia La Rose of Mauritius born about 1857 died in South Africa in 1888.
We know that she was born in Mauritius and according to South African records (which shows her death), details suggest that her mother's name was Rose. Apparently her father's name was Arastade La Rose (according to FamilySearch). The purpose for me explaining these details is that there is a baptism record in DPL Saint Louis Cathedral, with the mother's details listed as Marie ELINA with the dates match accordingly.
2. Adelson Parizot (Emilie)
Adelson was one of my ancestors that immigrated to South Africa, we have recently found his marriage details from within Mauritius that list his family name as Emilie. I have also crossreferenced the birth of his children which also reflects this name, however shortly after the birth of his 3rd child, the new family name is adopted as Parizot. The reasons behind this may be cause and effect of assimilation, discrimination etc. but how common would it be for Mauritian families to change their names AFTER the immigration and birth of a few South African born children?
I'm looking forward to the discussions here!
