Biography
Resident slave-owner on Jamaica, dying there c. 1756, son of John Duckinfield of Bristol and brother of Sir Samuel Dukinfield (q.v.).
Member of Assembly for Kingston, Jamaica, in 1731, St David 1733, St Thomas-in-the-East 1745 and 1749 and Portland in 1752. "In 1747 a private act was passed to entitle his reputed children to the same rights and priviliges with English subjects born of white parents."
Robert Duckingfield was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 46 acres of land in Kingston and 4992 acres of land in St Thomas-in-the-East, total 5038 acres.
Robert Duckinfield of Kingston, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1757. Slave-ownership at probate: 348 of whom 194 were listed as male and 154 as female. 90 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £19557.6 Jamaican currency of which £15709.08 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £25 currency debts and £229 currency plate.
Will of Robert Dukinfield 11/11/1755: 'On Jane Engusson, a free Negro Woman, he settled 101 acres and 14 slaves, 2 lots of land in East Kingston (Duke st) and the use of his town house in East Wingston [Kingston] until his brother Samuel should arrive from England, and all his furniture and plate, with £300 to have a house built one of the two fore mentioned lots. Also one of his chaises. To each of his two sons, William and Estcourt Dukinfield, by Jane Engusson, 400 acres, 4 slaves and a building lot in Kingston (opposite to Thomas Wheeler, Duke Street) To their sister Elizabeth 417 acres, 7 slaves and a building lot in Kingston adjacent to her brother. Also £500 to William, £500 to Estcourt and £1,000 as a dowry for Elizabeth provided she marry a white man. Residuary legatee of all his estate (including Dukinfield Hall Estate) his brother Samuel, with remainder to his sisters Martha Richards and Rebecca Hale, failing them to Sir William Dukinfield Daniel of Dukinfield Hall, Cheshire (his cousin) and failing all these to his children by Jane Engusson. Executors: Samuel Dicker, William Elworthy, Andrew Archdeckne, Zachary Bayley, Thomas Hibbert, Jasper Hall and Samuel Dukinfield. Date 17 Nov. 1755'
