Hi Madeline
I found the easiest way to find family was to find the Probate first. The probate usually gives you full names of deceased, deceased’s parents names, wife / husband and all the children’s names. I also find the census which also give you quiet comprehensive info. I haven’t come across any South African Census Records but most of my family I looked for were in England and Scotland Hope this helps. I have been using Family Tree.

You must find the names of your relatives. Initial don’t work to well on the search engines.
I notice your son has been doing your family ask him to show you.

always start with correct facts about your family that you know is true example; christian names, date of birth, marriage date, parents and grandparents correct full names and date of birth, birthday and correct age, all their children, christian names.

the more details you put in, the more smart matches you going to get. But please tripple check absolute all details before matching it to 1 of your family

I agree. Start with the actual facts that you know is true, either by verifying it with paper records or searching on Familysearch.org as an exsample. MyHeritage helps a lot as well, but just as Google & Wikipedia, they normally work on closest posible matches and most of the research matches are open source. You might find that all info seemingly match 100%, and it might be the correct info about a person, exceot for minor important detail mismarches.. Details like birthdays, dearh dates and places, etc. that was inputted based on guesses. This will cause you to doubt your own info and a profile or citation might get updated with wrong info, which then becomes the next returned matches for any future searches

Try and get records of births, marriages and probides by searching FamilySearch.org ss a starting point, as they host most of the recods and liks to them fir free. Someone else might have alternative sugestions, but these are normally the basics. Facebook and socialmedia also helps locating posibke unknown family members, thst might further assist in providing info or prove that might be helpfull to progress.Searching Government Gazetts online are also quite useful we looking for probite anouncements, case files like liquidations, insolvent estates, etc.

@ I found a few of your relatives names:
Grandfarther: Petrus Jacobus *1896
Great Grandfarther: Jacobus Johannes Gertenbach
His farther: Petrus Johannes *1832 x Anna Elizabeth ????
xx Catharina Susanna Salomina Gerber
His Farther: Petrus Johannes xx Martha Maria Magdalena ????
Great grandmother: Dorothea Maria ????

I normally find that names an dates of birth helps a lot.
Hope this will help you.
Rina
