The name "John Howard Paul Guthrie" was misappropriated from an 1880 Bristol England Baptismal Record.
There is no documented evidence that John Guthrie from Middlesex County, Virginia had or used a middle name or initial.
The transcription of the document was someone's easy mistake. A parish register including parents named John Guthrie and Elizabeth Guthrie, and their child named John Howard Paul Guthrie. Nothing at first glance that says it couldn't belong to a man from1700s VA.
Click on the name John Howard Paul Guthrie, however, and there is more transcribed data showing the DOB of 1800 with baptism 2 Jan 1880 in Clifton, St John the Evangelist, Gloucestershire, England.
A clock on the Original Record view shows that John Howard Paul Guthrie was born and baptized nearly 150 years after the death of this man, John Guthrie, from Middlesex County, VA who has absolutely no connection with him. Someone made an error, and now it has been copied and pasted across the internet as an accepted finding.
The correct name is simply "John Guthrie".
