Is there documentation for this Edward's mother?

Asking because Ancestry is showing her as Anne Philip (1630–1655)
Married 1652

Children
Edward (1664–1719)
Margaret Elizabeth (1674–1739)

but the trees that show that aren't in agreement as to how many spouses his father Peter had or who Peter's parents were, so I'm unsure who has the correct mother for Edward.

Thanks in advance for any additional info / clarification.

Keep me in the loop, he is my 17th great grand father. I have Anne of Gloucester, Countess of Stafford. Is this the same Anne Phillip that you have?

Bob Baird doesn’t have parents for this Edward Garland and explicitly not the son of any Peter Garlands.

  • “Some Background on the Garlands of New Kent and Hanover”. Bob's Genealogy Filing Cabinet < link > “ Nowhere in any of these articles is any evidence offered. Nor do any of them explain the reasoning or produce a source. It appears that both “Jane Jennings” and “Jane Hensley” are imaginary women. …” … “ The fact that Edward Garland gave the name Peter to a son (perhaps the eldest) is intriguing, but doesn’t constitute proof that his own father was named Peter. Nor is there is any evidence whatsoever that the imported Peter Garland was related in any way to Edward Garland.”

Disconnected Jane Garland as daughter of Peter Jennings, IV & Mary Jennings There is no evidence for them.

Edward & Jane have too many children attached, Bob Baird only has one possible daughter - Mary (Garland) Jennings - and 4 sons - Peter, John, Edward & James.

So we’ll be disconnecting Martha Overton

Elizabeth Overton

[Mary Nelson Mary Nelson]

Sarah Wingfield

As their daughters.

If evidence is provided that disproves Baird, they can be re attached.

In case it isn’t clear, Bob Filing Cabinet articles are “Best of Breed” for Southern USA genealogy. Any family’s he’s treated is very lucky to have had his attention.

Thanks for all the info, Erica. Your time on this is appreciated.

Debbie Gambrell - my usual question. Which child are you pursuing?

Well, Erica, it got a bit complicated. I was working on a project for my son on his paternal grandmother's lines. Then I discovered that she shares Anderson ancestry with my dad and another line with my mother.

In our Ancestry tree, Mary (Garland) Cosby is Len's 8th great-grandmother. I currently have her listed as unproven parents. The lines aren't connected in Geni yet:

Martha Overton

Mary and her husband John Cosby had a daughter named Mary who married Bartelot Anderson I and they are Len's 7th great-grandparents, but Barteltot is also my paternal 7th great uncle. The Cosby line was a new addition to Len's paternal lines, as I had not gone that far back on that line until today.

Capt. James Overton who married Elizabeth Garland is my paternal 7th great uncle. So, as you can see, just on my dad's side there are some overlapping connections. And I have now disconnected Edward 'the merchant' Garland from our Ancestry tree.

Then, Sarah (Jennings) Fowlkes is Len's paternal 6th ggm and Geni was making it seem her parents were known and had lineage connected, which I now have her in our tree as parents unproven instead of going back to Mary (Carey) Jennings and her husband.

I'm a Wingfield descendant on my maternal lines, but I don't 'think' they connect in any way to Sarah Elizabeth Wingfield (Garland) At this point, I can't even remember the maternal line I told Len earlier today also connects to his paternal grandmother. sigh lol

Erica, this is how Mary (Garland) Cosby connects to my son Len in our Ancestry tree:

Martha Garland Cosby* 1690-1749
8th great-grandmother
Mary Cosby Anderson 1715-
Daughter of Martha Garland Cosby
Frances Anderson Andrews -1791
Daughter of Mary Cosby Anderson
Howell Andrews 1771-1839
Son of Frances Anderson Andrews
Sarah Ann Andrews Howell 1794-1879
Daughter of Howell Andrews
Sarah McCloud Howell McCoy 1834-1875
Daughter of Sarah Ann Andrews Howell
John Lominus McCoy (1855-1926
Son of Sarah McCloud Howell McCoy
Joel William McCoy 1887-1963
Son of John Lominus McCoy
Mary Ophelia McCoy 1921-2020
Daughter of Joel William McCoy
Leonard Lee Ingram Jr., Ph.D. 945-
Son of Mary Ophelia McCoy
Leonard Lee 'Len' III, son of Leonard Lee Ingram Jr., Ph.D.

From my son Len up through the Andrews / Howell connections have been proven through years of research and from info passed to us from his paternal grandmother Ophelia (McCoy) Ingram in the form of a booklet published on her family lines. And Len has DNA validation via Ancestry ThruLines through his 5th grandparents on these lines - Howell Andrews 1771-1839, showing as grandson of Mary (Cosby) Anderson. All that is at that junction where Len's paternal Andersons and my paternal Andersons are all one family.

So the sources listed are useless, but the bio is intriguing:

Martha Garland was the daughter of Edward Garland, of the Devon, England branch of the Garland family. Martha Garland was a sister of Margaret Garland who married William Overton, and also of Elizabeth Garland who married Capt. James Overton. NOTE' Current Garland research doesn't link her father to anyone in the Sussex branch of the Garland family.

(Bad parent links)

The Devon Garlands are I think Peter, the son of Ambrose, but I need another window to check.

You could also look for John Colby’s Will.

Meanwhile, I’ll connect sister Margaret Garland Overton.

(unknown) Garland, of New Kent County

This profile is a placeholder for these women who seem to be sisters:

  1. Margaret "Peggy" Overton Mary or Margaret (b Aug 14, 1675? ) who married William Overton
  2. Martha Overton Martha (1685 - 1749) who married John Cosby
  3. Elizabeth Overton Elizabeth (1688 - 1739) who married 1) Daniel Truheart 2) James Overton
  4. Mary Nelson Mary (1698 - 1748) who married Edward Nelson

Re: Martha Garland was the daughter of Edward Garland, of the Devon, England branch of the Garland family …

That is this family: Peter Garland, of Isle of Wight County

of “Isle of Wight, VA”, which is not the New Kent area of William Overton & Capt. James Overton

Also, the Isle of Wight family was testate and all children are accounted for.

Hope this helps you, Debbie Gambrell

I attached Sarah Wingfield to the placeholder parents also.

Re: I'm a Wingfield descendant on my maternal lines, but I don't 'think' they connect in any way to Sarah Elizabeth Wingfield (Garland) …

I beg to differ. Not only does the geography suggest Sarah Wingfield was closely related to Martha Cosby, there’s this: Mary Cosby Married John Garland Cosby

Hello! Was there anything more common in this era than cousin marriages?

The problem is Record loss in Hanover County. Arson at the courthouse in 1787, apparently.

One more reference.

Genealogies of Virginia Families from the William and Mary College Quarterly. By College Quarterly. Page 185. < GoogleBooks >

… [John3 Cosby married first to] Martha Garland, born in 1690, died 1749. She was the daughter of Edward Garland, Sr., son of “Peter Garland who came to Virginia circa 1650, probably descended from Sussex branch of the Garland family in England.” Edward Garland Sr. had large grants in Hanover Co., formerly a part of New Kent.

Which again rules out the Isle of Wight family from Devon.

But, we have no proof that Edward Garland had any daughters. Alas.

The will for John Cosby is on his Wiki page:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cosby-33

but, it picks up mid-sentence rather than from the beginning of the will -

WILL

to son John Cosby 19 slaves and increase: Tom, Kate, Young Kate, York, George, Dick, Thebe, Sam, Aggy, Robin, Moll, Mingo, Jo., Dinah, Supio, Floro, Hannah, Lucy and Phillise; to my son William Cosby 22 slaves and increase: Old Will, mulatto Will, old Dinah, Matt, Bess, Sue, great Jenney, Dinah, Peter, young Tom, Abram, Jen, Adam, Aggy, Jemmy, Charles, Beck, Peter, Jolly, Bartlet, Milly and Cuzie. The remainder of the above tract of 3,000 acres in Louisa after this 1200 acres is laid off for son William remainder 1800 acres to my two grandsons Charles Dickenson and Higgason Dickenson sons of Griffith Dickenson to be equally divided between them. to son John Cosby all my personal estate that lies in Hanover Co. To son William Cosby all my personal estate that lies in Louisa Co. to my daughter Elizabeth Snelson 1 Negro Betty. Appoint two friends Clevears Duke and Bartelot Andersons exors. 12 Sep 1760. Sig. John Cosby. Wit. Nathl. Talley, Israel Hood, Garland Anderson. Rec. 26 May 1761 proved by oaths of all the witnesses.[2]

With reference to your comments about the Wingfield line, what you posted was the Wingfield connection to Len's paternal line as a cousin line and my reference was that I don't know if / how they connect to the direct Wingfield line on my maternal side. I wasn't saying they don't connect to Len's paternal kin.

Regarding daughters of Edward Garland, you'd think that William and Mary College Quarterly would be a reliable source.

One would think ! But the W&MQ article is uncited. Bob Baird examined the primary sources for his conclusions. And remember his point that the daughters are from submitted pedigrees on the husband side - not Garlands.

There have been many comments on how difficult these early Garland families are. I first encountered “Edward the merchant” conflated, in print, with immigrants to New Hampshire. (that’s the Garland shipbuilder line from Devon.)
